Research Fellow on 3D motion perception

A pair of linked post-doctoral positions are available from 12th January 2015, or as soon as possible thereafter, in the area of visual motion processing. The project is an inter-disciplinary collaboration between the universities of St. Andrews (Julie Harris, psychophysics, eye movements), York (Alex Wade and Tony Morland, fMRI, EEG, TMS) and Bradford (Marina Bloj, clinical vision science). Motion is a critical feature of visual perception, very little attention has been placed on how binocular information for motion is processed, nor what pathways carry out that processing. In this project we explore how binocular visual information about motion-in-depth (MID) is processed and carried by several different visual pathways.

One post, at St. Andrews, will involve designing and running human psychophysical and eye movement experiments on 3D motion perception. The post-holder will also be responsible for presenting the work at international conferences and preparing manuscripts for submission to leading journals.

The other post, at York, will focus on measuring neural correlates of 3D motion perception. This will include fMRI, EEG and TMS. As at St Andrews, the post holder will be involved in the design, execution, analysis and publication of experiments.

Candidates should have a good first degree in a relevant discipline, and a PhD, ideally in human vision or cognitive neuroscience (those holding qualifications in cognate disciplines will be considered). Experience of scientific programming, ideally for visual psychophysics experiments, functional neuroimaging, eye movement studies or cognitive neuroscience, is essential (preferably using Matlab). Experience of designing and running visual motion experiments will be highly desirable, as will experience of publishing in high profile scientific journals. All members of the project team will travel regularly to meet with collaborators. The project is funded via the BBSRC.

Informal enquiries can be directed to Professors Julie Harris ([email protected]) or Alex Wade ([email protected]).

These are a fixed term positions for 3 years.

Each of the positions is advertised by its host University, so there is a separate formal application process, and separate application deadlines for each. If you wish you apply for both posts, you must apply twice, once to each University.

Deadlines:

St Andrews position: Sept 10th 2014

York position: Sept 18th 2014
